What are interchange fee?

Interchange fee is a common term referring to a fee paid by one bank to another for the acceptance of transactions made by a card. Most often for sales opeartions it is a fee that a merchant's bank (the "acquiring bank") pays to a customer's bank (the "issuing bank").
